Vincent van Gogh was born in Zundert, a small village in the south of the Netherlands. The date on which he was born was the 30th of March 1853. This date was exactly one year after his mother gave birth to her first son, also named Vincent Willem, who unfortunately was born death.
In Zundert there is still a small grave which reminds us of the older Vincent Willem, born on the 30th of March 1852.
Vincent lived in Zundert till the age of 15 and he was not allowed to mingle with the mainly catholic children in the neighboorhood. For this reasen his father, the minister teached him in the house.
Nowadays it is possible to visit the place where Vincent and his family lived. This is called the Vincent van GoghHuis, where a small museum is located to remind us of the life of Vincent in Zundert.
Besides the Vincent van GoghHuis it’s possible to visit the following 5 monuments:
The church where Vincent’s father was a minister,Nederlands Hervormde Kerk. Besides the church you find the small graveyard.
The house of the aunties, Markt 25
The Zadkine statue of Theo and Vincent, Van Gogh Monument
The vicarage house, the small house that was bought in 1862/63
The market with the community house
Later on during his life Vincent often longed for the peaceful familylife the family went through in Zundert. In this environment he felt close to nature, a source of inspiration.
